We are moving out of summer and into the long dark haul. One small part of me cries briefly, wondering where the summer has flown? The other stands with open arms and welcomes autumn and the dark times. But the balance of light and dark is not just in seasons, but in everything around us...in our lives, our actions, our words. In the brightest times in our lives, there is always the little voice whispering dark and discordant words in your ear. In the dark and bitter cold of a long winter, there is always a voice, a smile, a hug that is brighter and warmer than the summer sun. It is no coincidence that Yule is the brightest of seasons...a season of light and warmth smack in the middle of the dark season. For without dark their is no light, and without light, no dark. You know the score. Ever notice how wondrous the tiniest light is in the darkness? Ever notice how appealing that patch of shade in the bright midday? The compliment one another perfectly as was always intended. I welcome the fall and the dark times, I welcome the time of rest and reflection, I welcome the time of ghosts and spirits. And I recognize that even in the darkest of times, I carry the light of the summer within, like a bright and burning flame in the dark. We are indeed a perfect balance of light and dark. We walk our own fine line all the time. We just need to make sure we don't slip off the tightrope and fall into one or the other. As a wise witch once told me, to paraphrase, both light and dark are complimentary. When you have only one or the other, it's like having a blank slate. With darkness and light, you have the shading that makes life complete. Blessings to you as you walk the line...
